Which mouse trap is best?

Which mouse trap is best? The short answer is to use A LOT and a VARIETY. Mice will go for one trap, but walk right by another. Research shows that placing two different traps side by side is more effective than two of the same trap side by side. With that said, learning what each trap does, and when to use them, will help you when picking out mouse traps for your situation. Let’s quickly break down each type of mouse trap, loosely ranked from most effective to least:

Rodenticide Stations:

These stations do not catch mice, instead they contain rodenticides (rodent poison) that the mice digest. These are considered highly effective in MAINTAINING control over mice. Our Recommendation would be to CATCH and DISCARD the majority of the infestation FIRST, and then use rodenticides to maintain after, to reduce the amount of affected mice indoors. Takeaway: Catch first, Bait later.

Snap Traps:

Snap Traps are highly effective at catching mice if you throw a little chocolate syrup, peanut butter, or even food they are already used to (whatever they are eating in your pantry) on them. Safety is important with snap traps, keep pets and children away, and place around ‘hot spots’ where you KNOW the mice are. Takeaway: Ten traps surrounding a nest directly, or directly in a known path, will be more effective than ten traps spread out randomly.

Glue Traps:

Research is all over the place on glue traps. Bait them, don’t bait them. Effective, Not Effective. What 5 years of experience has taught us: Use them as BOOBIE TRAPS. Mice continually running under the oven? Place 3 unfolded glue traps under the oven, at a right angle from the wall. Mice move FAST, won’t see them, and will get trapped. Takeaway: MAKE IT A TRAP. Place where they cannot avoid. Don’t think the mice will just walk up and get stuck on your glue trap.

Multiple Catch/ Live Catch traps:

These come in many shapes and sizes, but the idea is the same: Place bait in the station, set up in an area with mice or a known path, and mice will go into the station through a one way door, and are caught inside. They work great, but they shouldn’t be the only trap you are using to catch an initial population. Takeaway: These are great for when you need to put a trap in an area that would be unsafe for snap or glue traps (common areas, kids rooms, high foot traffic.)
